Bennerley Viaduct

The Bennerley Viaduct in Nottinghamshire is a disused Grade II* listed lattice girder railway viaduct which stretches for 443m in length. Built c.1876/7 and comprising 15 trestle piers, the structure spans the Erewash Valley. It remains merely due to the prohibitively high cost for the demolition of the wrought iron structure when it was taken out of use in the early 1970s.

Nottingham to Leicester by bicycle

Part 1 – Long Eaton to Mountsorrel.

The first section through Long Eaton and onto Sawley was pretty uneventful to be fair and highlights included Tesco Long Eaton and Sawley Marina. The public rights of way around the marina itself could do with some signage being installed to assist the rambler or cyclist. Eventually after wandering around a farm that unfortunately didn’t have any cows to entertainment me or be photographed, the farmers daughter directed me to the Midshires Way heading south – for some time through fields with crops knee high, which was nice when cycling on a racer.

Great Central Railway (Ruddington)

I was just a few miles away from Ruddington, south of Nottingham and as I knew there was some sort of a heritage centre there I thought i’d go and see. It just so happened that today there was a small classic car and bus show on as well as trips on the preserved railway from Ruddington towards Loughborough behind a Class 47. It was all free as well (except the trips on the train!).
