…Tony Benn, the ex-labour MP that is. There I was loitering on top of the reception counter at the UMIST students union when in he wandered, in a rather spritely way I thought. Apparently he was introducing some trade union evening in Club Underground which culminated with a free film showing on a related subject. For someone in his 80′s he seemed quite animated when chatting to people in the students union foyer…
I was there however for the lecture on Victorian Tunnelling methods… if it wasn’t for the 1/2 day CPD the Instuitution of Civil Engineers give me for going, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. I don’t know why the quality of lectures up north are so much worse than those down at the headquarters in London. I was glad I took a pint and newspaper in with me in the end…
