M60 at night

November 30, 2006, 10:24 pm

There appears to be a direct correlation between the amount of posts here and the levels of traffic on the motorways. It’s fair to say the last few weeks have been horrendous - I think the M56 is getting as bad as the M62 in places…

But hey, here’s the M60 in central Stockport looking east from the A6 with not much traffic unfortunately… I should have composed the photo’s last week maybe!! Oh well, enjoy with the thought that the tram photo’s from Manchester that are to come are even better :)

Ikl can build a bridge…

November 29, 2006, 7:38 pm

Yep, it’s true. What’s more… so can everyone else! I came across this fun bridge building simulator whilst at work today. You can either go with a given design and modify it, or build something from scratch. Once you’ve built your bridge, you test it by running a lorry over it! Great fun!!!

If the members are red, that denotes varying levels of compression; if they’re blue the members are in tension. If any members are curved then they’ve failed.

The best bit is to try and design for a catastrophic failure of the members so the lorry ends up in the river :D Great fun. The program is a 3.3Mb download but well worth it…

Manchester Pillow Fight!

November 28, 2006, 10:30 pm

Hmmm, I thought Flashmobbing was long gone, a craze that time had superseeded. Possibly not… there appears to be a Pillow Fight planned for Albert Square in Manchester on the 23rd December 2006. We shall see what transpires…

Bug of the Week #10

November 27, 2006, 8:47 pm

Another pair of bugs. I’m not too sure of the red Thales bug though… he looks a bit shifty lurking in the background!

Seasonal changes

November 26, 2006, 8:39 pm

You can really see just how late Autumn arrived this year, The trees in the woodland garden only started to lose their leaves earlier this month. It’ll be interesting to see when I get 12 photo’s, one from each month…

More blasted bumpy-bumpys!

November 22, 2006, 9:08 pm

Accidents galore… again, today. I’m beginning to draw the conclusion that anyone who is found to be at fault for causing an accident should lose their driving licence straight away. The hardship it would cause them by not being able to drive to work should in the end make people realise just important a thing it is being able to drive. Maybe drivers would then give some consideration to driving more carefully, leaving a bit of space so that they can brake if needed etc…

People may think i’m being a little heartless by saying this but after being stuck by certainly 10+ accidents over just the last three weeks;

a) I have no sympathy with the driver of the lorry which ended up on its side blocking two lanes of the M56 this morning gridlocking the motorway network;
b) nor the driver of the car who was clearly driving too fast when he clipped the kerb and spun on the A57 tonight blocking the whole road.

As you can see - the A57 isn’t very wide going through Rixton… no-one should be attempting the 60mph speed limit in the wet conditions we’ve experienced today… I hope he gets booked for dangerous driving.

Coincidence?

November 20, 2006, 7:45 pm

So there I am buying some Gaffer Tape to temporarily waterproof the two large holes under my car the same day I get invited to a pre-launch event for some big people carrier at the Nissan dealer in St. Helens. It’s as if the dealer knows my car needs some repairs. I was hoping to just plate and rivet up DumDum’s holes after the rust had been cut out and the metal treated, unfortunately things have gone a bit too far for that - welding is now the only option, certainly on the drivers side hole. Something to do one weekend I suppose…

Not Flickr but “Flicker”

November 16, 2006, 10:39 pm

It can be said that i’m a “flicker”. Yep, when i’m driving, I flick from one radio station to another all the time because commercial breakfast shows are just sooo rubbish. Entertainment for me during the commute comes from “flicking” when the adverts are on. It’s a great way of creating new adverts.

This morning I think I created the best one yet… “The Vauxhall Corsa…now available in Dry Roasted or Salted” It had me chortling all the way to Stockport.

You’ve got to love pointless questionaires. The employers have come up with a travel one this time - the idea being I should realise the error of my ways, dump the car and cycle to work. We get some eco-friendly cycle promotion every few weeks - the humorous chuckle when the first one emerged has now become “hmmm”. I have no inclination to travel 60 miles daily by bicycle, no matter what discounts on bike equipment I may get. I shall fill in this questionnaire only because it will skew the results wildly.
