More on Manchester’s banned buses…

December 30, 2006, 10:12 pm

I’ve been delving a little deeper into GM Buses / UK North’s problems… Not being knowledgeable on “The Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981″ or “The Transport Act 1985″, I don’t exactly know what the charges relate to. As there are however four charges, duplicated once for GM Buses and once for UK North I get the impression they could be in a fair bit of trouble.

- Consideration of disciplinary action under Section 17 (The Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981)
- Consideration of Transport Managers Repute under Schedule 3 (The Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981)
- Consideration of disciplinary action under Section 26 (The Transport Act 1985)
- Consideration of disciplinary action under Section 28 (The Transport Act 1985)

It will be interesting to see what happens on the 2nd when the public inquiry reconvenes.

Roman Bridge, Goyt Valley

December 30, 2006, 4:16 pm

Two photo’s of Roman Bridge just south of Marple. It’s a listed structure which allegedly dates from the 1700’s (if you believe everything you read on the internet!). I’m not at all convinced though - there’s nowhere near 300 years of spalling to the exposed stonework for a start, but I digress. It’s well worth a visit to see, but beware of the “roads” leading up to it from Marple Bridge or Mellor - they’re not adopted by the council and hence seriously knackered… my advice, take a 4×4 or walk!

Seasonal Change

The difference a few months make to the woodland garden… December and September.

Moo-ing Clock

December 26, 2006, 7:26 pm

I think one of my christmas presents may well become one of those “with hindsight, it would have been better if we hadn’t have bought it” presents. My parents decided to buy me an alarm clock which moo’s when it goes off. The downside (which everyone in the house will discover at 6:30am tomorrow morning, due to the fact i’m at work in the morning) is that (a) the volume can’t be lowered; (b) it keeps moo-ing for one whole hour unless you can find the switch to disable it! I think I may need to develop some sort of additional muffler for it…

Manchester Pillow Fight Photo’s

December 23, 2006, 11:40 pm

I’ve never seen Albert Square so trashed before. I had wondered since I initially heard about this what would actually happen… see for yourself. I suppose the bill for the clean up operation and the deployment of the police riot vans (Tactical Aid Units they seem to be called nowdays) will come out of council tax monies. I’ve never seen so many feathers covering the ground, that and the fellow in the fluorescent yellow jacket should be ashamed of bringing such a manky pillow out in public. I hope it’s since been incinerated.

UK North Banned

December 22, 2006, 10:27 pm

I’m hardly surprised… UK North / GM Buses have been banned from Manchester’s roads following safety concerns regarding poor training for their Polish drivers…

…and an extra article from the Evening News - who remembers the double decker bus which hit one of our bridges in Gatley on the night of the Manchester Blog Awards a few months ago? I’ve finally found a picture.

Confused Foliage

December 22, 2006, 8:02 pm

Somebody needs to tell my snowdrops (middle left) and Crocus (top right) that they shouldn’t start growing in December… they should wait for another 3 months until spring! The warm weather seems to be confusing lots of different plants in the garden - I don’t expect to see buds and shoots yet.

Drained…

December 21, 2006, 7:35 pm

Culverts, drains and the like are very eery places. You can see absolutely nothing in front of you - it’s totally black. Then there’s the constant whistling from the wind funnelling in from the other side - it’s very strange. I just popped my head in and thought “it’s about 200 metres long - no, don’t fancy that”, so just took external photo’s and left. It’s an interesting symmetrical picture I came out with though…

Award Time!

December 19, 2006, 7:46 pm

There was more than a passing interest at work today in an article that had appeared in the latest Institution of Civil Engineers North West Newsletter regarding the entries for the 2007 set of Awards. The Community Award is the one of most interest to us because it’s the one we’ve entered.

Down at the bottom of the linked page is a 200Kb or so pdf file with a blurb about each contender. Stockport & Manchester councils are both going for “Safer Routes to School” themes, but ours has added bridges!! The replacement for Allerton Railway station is an interesting contender…

As it’s also the first time one of my photo’s has been mass-published, the full colour card version of the article that came in the post will get framed I think…

The Big Wheel… again.

December 18, 2006, 9:03 pm

The Big Wheel in Exchange Square is a structure that I always seem to be able to find new, interesting angles to take a photo from. This time, looking directly up at night.
