Brabyns Park Tree

February 28, 2007, 7:44 pm

You can’t beat winter tree scenes especially with a good contrasting sky. This one was taken in Brabyns Park, Marple. It is actually the tree next to the famous (but structurally knackered) Ironbridge.

Cafe Metro, High Street, Manchester. (2 Images)

The frontage to the ground floor of this building is rather ornate for its current use as just another coffee shop.

Back at UMIST

February 27, 2007, 7:55 pm

It is just over 10 years since I got my UMIST library card, today I got a Manchester University Alumni library card. It’s reassuring to see that some things haven’t changed in the old UMIST library, the notices warning of “recent thefts” which were put up in 1999 are still there. The D-floor library is no more however… it’s been completely gutted from what I could see.

All in all I saved myself around £300 by not buying a load of books but instead borrowing them all from the library. Such classics as the unforgettable “Handbook to BS5628 Part 2 Section 2″ and the absolutely riveting “Reinforced Concrete Designers Handbook” (which is actually £80 on its own if I was to buy it). It’s a sad reflection on people doing structural design courses to say that I am actually the first person to borrow three of the books… and they’re not brand new.

M80 reopened after lorry unstuck

February 26, 2007, 5:54 pm

With an initial sentence such as “The rear end of a tipper truck which became jammed under an overhead motorway sign has been removed.”, you know the link is going to contain an amusing photo!

Some things are just wrong…

February 25, 2007, 7:02 pm

I don’t like Marmite. I don’t care much for Guinness. Imagine my dismay / surprise when I saw what is now available to buy.

Manchester Bridges #2

February 25, 2007, 5:55 pm

Merchants Bridge, Castlefield, Manchester. (4 Images)

The award winning steel arched bridge was constructed in 1995 at a cost of £416,000. The designer Whitby Bird and also Corus (formally British Steel) have extensive information about the famous structure on their websites.

Of interest is the additional support painted white under the bridge which transfers loads from the hollow arched member into the ground. This support also allows the brick faced abutment to the west to be situated much further away from the main structure by acting as a cantilevered support for the footway.

BBC Manchester Blogging Workshop

February 23, 2007, 10:58 am

An interesting evening all round, it was the BBC Manchester blogging workshop. Assembled were a wide selection of bloggers (and possible future bloggers) listening to Robin waxing lyrical on blogging. For me, I was looking for ways to sell some of my photographs as prints, posters and the like. Photo’s like this personal favourite from Goose Fair in Nottingham which thanks to the A0 CAD plotter from university now lives in my bedroom as an A0 poster. Craig offered the idea of using PhotoBox to facilitate this which is something i’ll certainly examine.

I’m sure there will be others such as Julia blogging about the event, no doubt the photo of which I took a photo of the photo being taken above (see if you can work that one out) will appear somewhere in the blogosphere at some point soon.

Surprise of the night were the prices at the BBC Manchester Club bar… 50p for a 500ml can of Fosters?! That makes the student bars look positively overpriced!

My latest addition is a vibrant burgundy bug. It is a “Family info Link” bug advertising the Stockport Children’s Information Service.
