Taken from what once would have been the entrance to Manchester Exchange Railway Station but looking in the opposite direction, the Cathedral & the modern Arndale tower.
It is interesting to see what actually remains of the old station whilst I was there – as it just became a large car park and was never built upon, there’s quite a bit still in existance. The remains of a footbridge could well become a future Manchester Bridges feature because most of the bridge deck has been removed and you can now see exactly how it was constructed. The famous (and one time record holding) 2,194 foot long platform is still there as are the other platforms and if you look closely, sections of girders protruding from the top of the bridge parapet adjacent to the long platform… these once being the uprights for the station roof.
