Stairway to Heaven

This fire escape caught my eye a few weeks ago but i’ve only tonight got around to stopping to take a photo. It was formerly attached to an old 4 or 5 storey warehouse in Shaw Heath, Stockport which lost its gable end wall during strong winds a few months ago. A building losing a whole gable end wall can be quite a terminal problem, especially for old buildings, this one was hence demolished.

Piccadilly Approach

It’s a place everyone sees as they leave Manchester from Piccadilly Station. The video tower being an addition only a few years old but one i’ve always thought is sympathetic in style to the rest of the building. It is maybe something to do with the horizontal steel banding continuing around from the original structure.

48 years on…

Always a fan of the Concrete Centre’s Concrete Quarterly Magazine, i’ve downloaded issue 42 dating from 1959 which includes an article on the “emergence” of a new Manchester. Highlighting examples of new architecture, i’ve recreated (so far) two of the photographs to see the changes. First, Peter House on St. Peter’s Square and then Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station (apparently demolished in 1996).

Einstein’s Riddle

Entertainment from the pub… it required a little thought and probably thinking about when a little more sober… So then – who will be first to work out who owns the fish?

Video Car

…or “How to make people slow down and drive at the national speed limit when they see you.”

I thought it would be an interesting experiment to video my journey from Warrington to Stockport, the plan being to eventually speed the footage up by 5x-10x and see whether I got something entertaining.

On my passenger seat, I had the camera tripod set up with the video camera mounted on top. I didn’t think people in other cars would take so much notice of it when I was driving along. As it was, evidently a fair few of them must have have thought I was driving an unmarked police car! I can’t offer any other excuse for all cars in all lanes for no reason slowing to below 70 mph on numerous occasions throughout the journey as I passed by. Why the police would drive an old Nissan Almera I don’t know.

The video in the end was a huge success, I just need to buy a firewire card to download the footage so I can process it. I think a loop of the M60 might be worth a try next…
