Manchester House

September 29, 2007, 4:11 pm

I remember earlier this year or late last year during the Heritage Open Days week there was a rather informative free guided tour of some of manchester’s post-war architecture. The rumour at the time apparently was that plans for Manchester House to be demolished were on the drawing board. So here’s a photo whilst it is still there, the new Magistrates Court offices are in the background.

Chadkirk Light Show

September 28, 2007, 5:45 pm

Last night I went to a light show in a field near Chadkirk Chapel in Stockport Borough. It was an event to raise awareness of the local councils tv programme bid for cash to build a bridge over the river Goyt. It was essentially loads of strip lights placed in the ground under electricity pylons. The energy arcs from the power lines and lights the tubes in some way… It was interesting to see. It is there (vandalism permitted!) until next thursday.

TSS Manxman

September 26, 2007, 9:01 pm

I’ve just had one of those moments when long forgotten memories suddenly return. The BBC Inside Out programme broadcast a piece on the TSS Manxman, formerly one of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company boats.

I got to go on board at one point when it was docked in Liverpool about the time it was being sold by the Steam Packet Company - which would make it somewhere around 1982. It was all rather nice inside, I quite clearly remember the wide stairway from the deck going down below that was shown on the programme. It was a shame to see the boat in such bad condition - I confess however I hadn’t realised it still existed. To this day I have a momento of the visit somewhere… a TSS Manxman branded orange life jacket with whistle! The life jackets were all getting thrown away at the time, I suppose as there was no further use for them.

Campaigners are trying to save the ship - but it looks like the current owners may have the boat scrapped, which would be a shame.

Spinningfields Symmetry

September 25, 2007, 7:04 pm

The new Spinningfields development in Manchester is really worth a visit if you like photographing buildings. Some of the buildings are finished, others part finished - there are some good shots to be had…

Countryside

September 21, 2007, 5:16 pm

There was a rather nice view from one of the highest points of Glossop Road running between Marple Bridge and Glossop, I just happened to be working there last weekend. The view is looking towards Compstall and Marple in the far distance.

River Irwell Bridge

September 18, 2007, 6:49 pm

Cable stay bridges are typically thought of as centrepieces, something that adds to a particular area. I can’t understand therefore why this one is rather hidden away crossing the River Irwell close to Salford Central Railway Station. From the Manchester side you need to wander down a small track between two buildings and head around a bend to find it (or notice it side on from the road bridge further south). It’s nice, minimalist, but the access to one side has been poorly thought out… however nothing a good demolition crew couldn’t sort out!

No Entry!

September 17, 2007, 9:02 pm

This evening I went to UMIST to take back my library books which I got out in May, alas I was thwarted - it seems an unmanned electronic turnstile has been installed in the mezzanine entrance foyer over summer. How i’m supposed to get through it to take my books back to the library I don’t know. An email of complaint will be winging its way to the university library tomorrow highlighting the problem seemingly with all Alumni who want to get in to the library. Thumbs up for poor planning on the part of the university…

Modern Manchester

September 15, 2007, 4:42 pm

I think this is the new Manchester Magistrates Court Building. It is certainly a rather interesting building anyway, one which I recall has won awards for its design.

Wi-fi testing

September 13, 2007, 6:26 pm

Well it has finally happened, i’ve managed to find somewhere to test my laptops wi-fi. It sort of makes up for working a second night in a row and my impending all day saturday stint. I’m currently next to Torkington Park in Hazel Grove about to head to site over in Marple.

The station with no trains…

September 11, 2007, 9:08 pm

It is a bizarre feeling to stand on the platform of Ardwick Railway Station. It is still open to the public but only has a total of 25 trains stopping at the station per week (5 per day in total, monday to friday). There are no signs on the surrounding roads to point out it still exists - I noticed the footbridge over the railway from the Stockport line and hence wondered where it went. It is also the only station I know of which has a section of platform completely grassed.

It is an interesting place to see before the inevitable station closure occurs.
