I’ve just had one of those moments when long forgotten memories suddenly return. The BBC Inside Out programme broadcast a piece on the TSS Manxman, formerly one of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company boats.
I got to go on board at one point when it was docked in Liverpool about the time it was being sold by the Steam Packet Company – which would make it somewhere around 1982. It was all rather nice inside, I quite clearly remember the wide stairway from the deck going down below that was shown on the programme. It was a shame to see the boat in such bad condition – I confess however I hadn’t realised it still existed. To this day I have a momento of the visit somewhere… a TSS Manxman branded orange life jacket with whistle! The life jackets were all getting thrown away at the time, I suppose as there was no further use for them.
Campaigners are trying to save the ship – but it looks like the current owners may have the boat scrapped, which would be a shame.
