Cob ‘o Coal Pub

January 30, 2008, 9:51 pm

This old pub is the only thing left remaining in what once was the Cardroom housing estate in Ancoats. According to the New Islington development website, “It’s retention is as much symbolic as anything else and we want it to be a watering hole which is a central focus for the community.”.

Tidal Bars

January 25, 2008, 11:28 pm

If you head out to Bar Fringe and settle in for the night… watch the flow of traffic into and out of the pub. As Ian J said… the pub is effectively tidal. Prepare for a storm surge of custom around 10pm however… there’s no chance of getting served at the bar for a good quarter of an hour… then there is low tide again!

Arty houses for birds.

January 23, 2008, 8:58 pm

I wonder if this colourful bird house (one of a few) high up along one side of the new medical centre in Ancoats are actually functional… I hope so!

Brick Canvas

January 21, 2008, 9:15 pm

I’ve always been interested by this block of houses in Ancoats. They have been there for a few years now and to two sides just border disused brownfield land completely fenced off - land I assume will eventually form part of the even more arty New Islington redevelopment.

This is not beer!

January 19, 2008, 12:50 am

A group of us descended upon the Winter Ales Beer Festival in New Century Hall, Manchester earlier this evening. In my opinion the best beverage there was brewed by the Portland Brewing Company of Darwen, Lancashire. It was the first time I have seen Dandelion & Burdock being served from a real ale hand pump. It had to be tried and is definitely recommended. I liked the fact it was thought necessary by the organisers to remind people that it wasn’t alcoholic! Surely everyone has heard of Dandelion & Burdock?

Mystery White Building

January 14, 2008, 10:32 am

I think a little research is needed on this building. I spotted this little gem hidden away off a side street close to Piccadilly Railway Station. It has a temporary wooden fence surrounding it and appeared to be having some building work done to it.

Ancoats footpath tunnel

January 13, 2008, 7:12 pm

A historic tunnel under a road in Ancoats adjacent to the Rochdale Canal… note the hole to the top of the arch where several bricks have fallen out.

Canal Signage

January 13, 2008, 1:10 pm

It is obviously such a problem on the Rochdale Canal that Manchester City Council & the Police have seen the need to plaster these signs all around the city centre canal network. All was quiet along the canal this morning however, I don’t even remember passing anyone during my wander.

Delays

January 11, 2008, 8:18 am

If you have mobile internet then you too can see just how delayed your train is while you are actually on it.

Automation

January 11, 2008, 7:57 am

My local station has had its automatic train announcement tannoy fixed, alas its first greeting to me was
“…the 0650 Northern Rail service to Warrington Central is running approximately 12 minutes late”. How nice. Sandra the ticket office person reckons it has taken two years to get it fixed, I suppose it is an improvement on having to ring the previous station to see if the train has left yet.
