Jubilee Walk

June 26, 2008, 12:05 pm

I’m currently in London. Rather than planning what to do today, I thought i’d be a little spontaneous. I discovered a sign for the Jubilee Walk (a 16 mile walk around London) and so i’m doing that. It is interesting seeing all the places that link up the famous tourist places. It is something you wouldn’t see when using the tube. The weather is perfect for it too!

I’m about halfway round, currently at the Tower of London. I seem to be doing it backwards which makes for added entertainment, with no map, just following the markers on the pavements.

Liverpool One

June 19, 2008, 8:38 am

This is the new shopping complex that covers half of Chevasse Park and Paradise Street in central Liverpool. So much has been made of it, I thought i’d have a look. The security guards are seemingly rather paranoid I thought, the moment I got my camera out one rushes over to me asking “you’re not taking a photo are you?”. I explained that was the general idea when someone holds a camera out in front of them. Apparently the manager doesn’t like people taking photo’s of the development and the security guard had been told to stop any photo’s being taken. He seemed particularly concerned the photo’s were for media use. I wasn’t in the mood for the chap and pointed out that I was standing on a pedestrianised adopted highway (namely South John Street) which as it was adopted by the city council enabled me to go about my lawful business which includes taking photos should I wish and he had no authority to stop me. He didn’t know how to respond to that one and wandered off. It is apparently only a 1/3 complete and only 1/2 of those shops are open along South John Street at the moment. Quite pathetic really. The build quality is questionable too which leads me to think it has been partially opened rather quickly for the “capital of culture year” and that is why photos are not liked - the metal cladding to the John Lewis store is frankly shoddy in places.

Here are some photo’s of what is currently open…

Return to ASDA

June 16, 2008, 8:15 pm

I’m wondering if I walked into a management eco-trial during my visit to the local ASDA supermarket earlier in the month. This week, plastic carrier bags are back on the checkouts and the reusuble eco-bags are now displayed as reduced from 10p to 5p. If you look across through all the other aisles you see normality has returned with everyone using the free carrier bags again and the eco-bags just acting as decoration.

I looked at the eco-bags which according to the signs are “100% recyclable” and wondered how even with a 50% reduction in their price, as no-one wants to buy them - why doesn’t the supermarket start using recyclable material in the standard sized free carrier bags? There must be a solution to the additional cost issue I assume there is. I wonder what ASDA will try next.

Go Superlambananas!

June 16, 2008, 5:00 pm

Imagine Cow Parade, but utilising Liverpool’s famous Superlambanana sculpture. There are 125 2m tall Superlambanana’s grazing around Liverpool from the 16th June to the 25th August 2008. This one was pictured on the Dock Road (the section of road to the south called Wapping). You of course won’t see this Superlambanana as an exhibit - this was the actual Superlambanana following a makeover by some local grafitti artists a few years ago. I wonder if this was the inspiration however for “Go Superlambananas!” - I suppose you get the idea of what to expect.

You too can go superlambananas here!

Moving house?

June 14, 2008, 8:21 pm

Rachel ordered a big white toy for her to play with during her house move earlier today. I think some of us are getting quite accomplished moving things from one location to another. Lots of pig was consumed by all. Mmmm.
