RAF Burtonwood Hangers
July 27, 2008, 6:45 pmThere is still quite a fair bit to see at what was once RAF Burtonwood, three concrete hangers to the north west, two steel hangers to the north east which up until recently were used by a distribution company and then there are the taxiways remaining. The main runway was on almost an identical orientation to the M62 today, though you can see some of the original runway to the south side. It is all set for demolition, a business park is going in its place.

Buy before you vend
July 27, 2008, 1:27 pmA mini crime-wave has hit Sankey, the Ace of Hearts Petrol Station (which is technically just over the border in Merseyside and therefore not in Sankey) has been subject to a number of “drive-offs” over the last week. Noel & Joan have successfully alienated all their regular customers by strictly inforcing a “pay before you vend” policy. As I pointed out to todays till person, “How am I supposed to pay in advance when I don’t know how much petrol my can will take?” (I needed petrol for the lawnmower on this occasion). “How are you paying?” she asked, to which I replied “Cash of course!”. She estimated a full petrol can would cost about £5.75 so I gave her £5 and said I would sort out the rest after vending. In actual fact I was still filling the can when at £9.53 the petrol cut off. I went into the shop to moan yet again as it was only 2/3rds full.
They have apparently lost around £200 worth of petrol from people driving off without paying, at todays prices that is only 3 Volvo Estates worth of petrol. It was amazing just how much consternation could be caused by the introduction of the new policy. Everyone was moaning at the till person, just putting £5-10 in their tanks and I suppose then going round to ASDA to fill the tank full. I can see the new policy stopping drive-offs but equally I can see people just taking their business to the ASDA nearby as I proved the point sucessfully that for cash purchases, you can’t know how much a full tank will be and therefore estimate the cost. I’m not going back until they revoke the stupid policy. They should invest in some number plate cameras…

Newbury Park Bus Shelter
July 17, 2008, 5:24 pmWhen I was last down in London, I travelled over to Newbury Park to see the unusual concrete bus shelter dating from the early 1950s.

Out of date signage
July 14, 2008, 7:33 pm
If you find yourself travelling along Deansgate on Sunday 24th June 2007 bear in mind you could experience major delays. This photo however was taken over a year later on Sunday 13th July 2008 - I wonder how long the sign will remain at the junction of Whitworth St. West and Deansgate before someone realises it is still there and removes it?!

Speedy DLR!
July 9, 2008, 7:28 pmI have always liked the Docklands Light Railway, mainly because you can sit where the driver normally does on a normal tram or train. I’ve never had a go doing something like this though. Here is the journey from Stratford to Canary Wharf in 1 minute 48 seconds.

British Museum Atrium
July 6, 2008, 9:04 amTo be fair, I had actually come to see this bit of the building rather than the museum exhibits. It is quite impressive to see. Some of the exhibits are interesting as well I suppose.
