More Tunnels

January 21, 2009, 8:41 pm

I got about 2m into these tunnels before the gas detector expressed its disatisfaction at the lack of oxygen in the air and asked to leave. I knew ventilation was an issue but didn’t expect dust particulates to hang in the air so much - then there was my breath which didn’t help. I’ll revisit them later in the year.

Regional news for the wrong region

January 18, 2009, 4:37 pm

Calendar comes on the TV…
I always remember it being Central News…
Then I remember about the regional news rationalisation within ITV…
So I sit back, resigned to learning about local events in Yorkshire…
I’ve still no idea what is happening in the East Midlands, which is where I am.

B&Q 1 - The Cadland 0

January 16, 2009, 8:46 pm

B&Q won… and i’m financially lighter - but all my purchases are tax deductable (I keep reasuring myself). Should I buy a new back door? - I keep wondering as the door that is currently on the Nottingham house is adequate but from a security point of view has far too much glass in it for my liking. £100 give or take if I buy a solid one…

I’ll visit The Cadland tomorrow for a beverage…

DIY apathy

January 16, 2009, 6:01 pm

I was so eager to get over to the house in Nottingham to finish off the new laminate floor at around 1530… now i’m here, i’m not really in the mood for DIY and am loitering on the internet. There is not much in the way of food in the house - or anything really as it is virtually empty so I think the local pub for tea… or maybe i’ll drag myself to B&Q first… or leave that for the morning - decisions, decisions…

I haven’t had a good queue for a while…

January 14, 2009, 1:08 pm

There was an overturned vehicle on the M62 this morning. The motorway was stationary as far as the eye could see looking west from junction 8 towards junction 7. Travelling eastbound on the motorway I observed drivers willingly(??!) sitting in the queue going the other way as far as junction 10. Why??? It is an old joke that the british enjoy queuing but i’m sure people have better things to do… have people never heard of using the M6 and A580 East Lancs Road into Liverpool before?

Name that bridge

January 11, 2009, 3:16 pm

It is interesting to see when some home videos are taken, what appears incidental at the time can become very interesting 40 years later. My dad is fishing to the side of a wide expanse of water in one cine film, next to a large bridge made up of a box section girder arrangement. The film then proceeds to pan across this bridge a few times. It is a famous one which all bridge engineers should know and people knowledgable in the work of George and Robert Stephenson as well. It is the original box girder Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits, prior to the fire in 1970 which effectively destroyed the historic bridge.

41 years later…

January 11, 2009, 12:49 pm

I’ve been looking through reels of old standard 8mm cine film and came across this location. It is the house in Warrington during construction in 1968. It is something i’ve never seen before!
