Scrap

April 22, 2009, 5:24 pm

I couldn’t believe how quick it took people in the office to come over to tell me about the governments new “£2k for old cars if you scrap them and buy a new one” policy announced in the Budget.

I wasn’t interested, even though I currently have four cars that qualify for the scheme…

Easter Island head, St Helens

April 22, 2009, 5:07 pm

Modern art has arrived in St Helens, it is called “Dream”. On the top of the spoil heap from Sutton Manor Colliery is a new concrete easter island stylee head. I do hope the foundations are piled considering where it is located! I wonder how much it cost for an artist to come up with the idea of doubling the vertical dimension whilst retaining the horizontal.

I actually prefer the sculpture if it had been left in perspective and I hadn’t just halved the height of the image. I suppose then it wouldn’t be art… just a head.

Lack of mortar error

April 19, 2009, 10:41 am

I had expected a quiet day finishing off the repairs to the conservatory. I seem to have made the mistake of inspecting the mortar joints on the chimney stack though. How is it standing up with so little mortar, I don’t know. It is lucky is isn’t a windy day - perfect weather for sitting on the main roof and carrying out some prompt repairs.

New Car

April 13, 2009, 10:05 am

I took my new company car for a spin last night - I think the councils promotion of eco-cars might be going a bit too far however!

Bulwell

April 13, 2009, 10:02 am

A couple of stops further south on the tram. A place not trying to be a tourist town. It actually has interesting features…

Bulwell Bogs wasn’t in fact a set of public conveniences but a bit of land next to the river that continually floods. So the town council decided to put a childrens playground there.

Grabbing my attention to the far end of the bogs was “the stone bridge”. Maybe naming infrastructure isn’t a strong point in Bulwell. It was a nice bridge anyway.

Further into the town was this bacon sandwich / jacket potato sellers vehicle. It was an old converted Citroen van. Very tasteful. More people seemed interested in the van than the goods on sale inside however…

Hucknall

April 12, 2009, 3:34 pm

At the northern end of the Nottingham tram system lies Hucknall. It seems day long bus tickets give free travel on the trams too now, so I travelled to the end of the line. Judging from all the signs and visitor information boards as you walk from the tram/train station towards the town, one gets the impression it is trying to rebrand itself as a tourist destination.

Here we have one of the major tourist features in the town (number 1 of 17 in fact!) - the Coalmining statue. There isn’t much to say about it other than there it is and a passing old lady told me I had to include the miner at the bottom as well as the one on the top in the photo.

Wandering through the bustling tourist feature number 17 (the spectacular open air market) I noticed a carved statue of Byron adoring a building opposite. Interesting I thought, but didn’t realise until much later that this was in fact tourist feature number 15!

Not yet making it onto the tour is this newish sculpture of - a giant lemon juicer??! Which perhaps was actually the only semi-interesting thing in the town, other than such delights as the local Wilkinson store (which has a new style logo adorning the outside which I haven’t seen before and a big Tesco. Following my visit I can now understand why the tram goes as far as Hucknall - it must be so that everyone in the town has a means to escape. What a dire hole, on a par with Rhyl perhaps?

Greens Windmill, Nottingham

April 12, 2009, 9:22 am

Entry to the museum was free and I like things that are free. It is an old windmill from the early 19th century in Sneinton, Nottingham. A great destination for the children as it has an attached science centre (and this weekend an easter egg picture hunt!!). The windmill itself is open to the public, right up to the top and commands some good views of Colwick and the city. Just don’t stand on the grass - given most of the visitors are under 10, I really think the city council should do something about the extensive dog fouling issue surrounding the museum.

Nottingham Skyline

April 11, 2009, 3:16 pm

The city skyline taken from the St. Anns district of Nottingham. I was surprised not to be assaulted, mugged, shot or run over during my meander through one of the less affluent areas of the city… it was all very quiet in fact.

Nottingham Victoria station site

April 11, 2009, 3:13 pm

What a great place to put a dull looking concrete car park - in a deep cutting that was once the location of the Great Central Railway station. The tunnel entrance to the north is visible in the distance.
