Media City Swing Bridge

Today I went for a walk over the new Media City bridge under construction at Salford Quays. About 85m long in total, there is currently only about 60m of the deck assembled. The bridge will have a see-through mesh floor along one side and the other side solid – it’ll be 8 or 9m wide at one end and about 20m at the other. It should be being lifted into place during August 2010.

Brinksway Air Raid Shelter

The recently exposed view inside from one of the air raid shelter entrances in Stockport. Shuttered concrete forms the entrance into the tunnels cut through the sandstone.

Under the Great Northern Warehouse, Deansgate

Last night I went on a guided tour under the Great Northern warehouse. I’m not totally convinced that the risk assessments needed for such an event were in order given the lack of any lighting, numerous trip hazards and a flooded section which wasn’t cordened off. However, it is something that not many people will ever see.

The photo’s are a little grainy which is down to the fact I didn’t know how to use the extended exposure setting and I didn’t have a torch. Subterranea Britannica has similar photos which are a little clearer and has a good history on the canal tunnels. It was a fascinating place to go – i’d recommend it.

Election Canvassing

We all have minor things that really annoy us… one of the things that gets on my nerves (other than finding the British Rail logo printed back-to-front on roadsigns) is people not closing the front gate as they leave my property.

The Lib Dem candidates representative left the front gate ajar on leaving today after pushing a flyer through the letter box. I’ll be marking the Lib Dem candidate down on that when I take to time to browse their policies.

The Labour candidate representative was noted to have took the effort to turn around and close the gate. Good for him.

I wonder if the Conservative and Green party candidates aren’t bothering this election campaign? The Greens always used to make an effort…
