Cycle upgrade

It was about time, the tyres on my 1995 Raleigh Flyer were by now 16 years old and disintegrating.

The comment from the cycle shop owner whilst attempting to read the tyre size information (formerly) embossed on the tyre summed it up – “I can well believe that this is the original tyre, you’ve definitely had your moneys worth!”. So i’ve bought a pair of the Schwalbe Marathon tyres with kevlar lining and I also got some handlebar tape at the same time.

All the bike could do with now are some new brakes as the original ones are frankly rubbish (but after such a long time with them, I am now used to cycling with virtually no brakes anyway) and it should last another 16 years!

Nottingham Tennis

This week and next is the “Nottingham Festival of Tennis” – an event created to replace to now defunct LTA Nottingham Open. This new event is completely free to all and given the difficulty I experienced in finding a spare seat on Centre Court, I can see why! In the end I chose a seat in the west stand which at that point only had a chap reading a newspaper sitting some distance away from me.

The first match I watched was Eleni Daniilidou v’s Tamira Paszek which was won by Daniilidou, the second match was Gilles Muller v’s Ryan Sweeting which was won by Muller. It was interesting to note that the player in each match whom continually disagreed with the match referee over line calls ended up losing their match.

Eleni Daniilidou, currently world no. 153

Gilles Muller, currently world no. 121
