Cob ‘o Coal Pub
This old pub is the only thing left remaining in what once was the Cardroom housing estate in Ancoats. According to the New Islington development website, “It’s retention is as much symbolic as anything else and we want it to be a watering hole which is a central focus for the community.”.

Wow! I cannot believe how terrible this old pub now looks.
I spent many nights in the Cob o Coal around 1990.
I used the live in The Crown pub which was just a few 100 yrds on the same road. I have no idea what happend to the Crown Pub or the Cardroom housing estate. I would be interested to know if the Crown still stands? I had many friends that lived on that estate and until today l did not know that the houses had been pulled down.
The community was very close, and it is sad to think that all the families must have been dispursed, split and rehomed in various places.
I left Ancoats in 1991 and now live in london. I have never been back, but l have very fond memories of Ancoats, the people and colourful characters.
The family’s l remember most were the Gallaghers, and Masons.

If the Crown Pub was only a few hundred yards away from the Cob o Coal then it definitely has gone. There is absolutely nothing surrounding the pub for quite some distance – what was the Cardroom Estate has been flattened and the vacant area and some of the roads are fenced off awaiting redevelopment.
