The eco-train is delayed due to engineering work

I haven’t been to ASDA for a while, so I arrived at the tills for the standard corporate exchange of “Hi” to be surprised by a new additional line “Have you brought bags with you?”. I looked at the checkout operator in a “what stupid question to ask” sort of way before replying “…of course not.”. I looked over to the end of the checkout to see the standard plastic carrier bags have been replaced with big green things costing 10p each. Unimpressed with them, I looked back at the checkout operator in a “where are the carrier bags” sort of way to be met by the operators “aren’t you going to buy a few reusable bags” stare. After 10 seconds or more she relents and produces a solitary carrier bag from under her desk. I start packing.

With almost everything packed into 2 carrier bags, she exclaims “that will be…” a bit over £20 I think it was. I comment “Yes, but i’ll have another carrier bag please. We return to the “you surely don’t want another one? / yes I do” staring competition. Yes I did want another one as I wasn’t prepared to squash a freshly made apple pie into either of the existing bags. She reluctantly relented and handed me another carrier bag for the apple pie.

What a bizarre experience, I can only assume ASDA has inaugurated an eco-drive to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags. I can’t wait to go back and repeat the scenario, it was great fun!
